President‘s Message: 2010 Northern BC Winter Games
All of Prince Rupert is gearing up to host the 2010 Northern British Columbia Winter games February 4 ‾ 7, 2010.
Rupert last held the games in 1999 and before that in 1989 and 1981, just three years after the inaugural Northern Winter Games.
We are thrilled to be hosting the games in our Centennial year and as a warm-up to the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Our games will offer more than 12 different sporting competitions with an estimated 950 athletes participating. Add in coaches and supporters and we are looking to see an influx of about 1,200 visitors. This is a challenging undertaking for the Board of Directors, their team of volunteers and indeed, the entire community. But what a thrill it will be to showcase the beauty of Prince Rupert and the friendliness of our people.
For the first time, the directors are attempting to limit the carbon footprint of the games through an articulated “green” policy in addition to fulfilling our motto: “Prince Rupert: Where Fun Reigns!”
I welcome everyone to come and participate in this fabulous event, whether as an athlete, coach, supporter, or volunteer. As we work and play together we will create lasting memories for locals and visitors alike. See you in February!
